In Ernakulam, a staggering 164 tonnes of waste materialize each day. Unfortunately, many people indiscriminately dispose of plastic, glass, bio-degradable waste, e-waste, and more, without segregating them. The recent incident at the Brahmapuram waste plant serves as a stark reminder of our collective apathy toward waste management. The emissions from this facility were laden with toxic gases like carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, and nitrous oxide, posing grave health risks. This perilous situation results from the incineration of plastics and other hazardous materials within the plant. The question we, as tech students, must grapple with is: What can we do about it?
People are often unwilling to put the extra effort required for waste segregation and proper waste management. If this continues, there’s a high chance that the incidents like Brahmapuram waste plant fire will happen frequently.
A Waste Composition Recognition Software that will identify the type of solid wastes and classify
it into the below three:
• Plastic Waste
• Glass Waste
• Other Bio-degradable waste
We will be using artificial intelligence and image processing to detect the type and composition
of the waste. Once completed, this software will be made accessible to the public to use it for
practical applications.
